Den Kern bilden die drei Dörfer Ost-, Mitte- und Westgroßefehn. Verwaltungssitz der Gemeinde ist Ostgroßefehn. Das Adjektiv lautet Großefehntjer mit dem für das Ostfriesische Plattdeutsch .
